Localization

About the product
Language localization differs from straightforward translation activity because it involves a comprehensive study of the target culture in order to correctly adapt the product to local needs. Localization at times is referred to by the numeronym L10N.

Localization includes activities in which various applications, software tools, on-line tips or web pages are converted into (an)other language(s) in such a way that the resulting product is not only correctly translated with regard to the target country of use, but also so that its functionality is fully preserved. This essentially concerns the extraction of all text from the source application, its translation and re-import to its destination and testing in the target application.

Simply put, localization does not require making any changes to the programming code, thereby avoiding the need to create a completely new piece of software for each area where the product will be launched. All that is translated and edited is the text – not the code.

This in turn:
• decreases the workload for programmers, graphic designers and other professionals,
• lowers the risk of errors,
• reduces the cost of creating versions in different languages, and
• reduces the cost of future updates.
